Rationale
The 6th Nakem International Conference, Sursuro: Mother Language Education and Cultural Nationalism, aims to provide a venue for a committed and critical conversation on the nexus of education mediated by the first language of educands and the promotion of the sense of nation through the celebration and cerebration of the experience of cultural diversity and pluralism.

Convening the conference are the Nakem Conferences International Philippines Chapter, the Nakem Conferences International, the Ifugao State University, and the University of Hawai’i Ilokano Language and Literature Program.

Member academic institutions of the Nakem Conferences consortium are co-sponsoring the 6th Nakem International Conference.
These include the Mariano Marcos State University, the University of Northern Philippines, the Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology, the Apayao State College, St. Mary’s University, Ifugao State University, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Cagayan State University, Quirino State College, Mountain Province State Polytechnic College, Pangasinan State University, Nueva Vizcaya State University, Benguet State University, Isabela State University, Kalinga-Apayao State College, Northern Luzon Philippines State College, and Batanes State College.

The specific goals of the conference are:
1.  To exchange ideas and action plans for the comprehensive and integrative implementation of mother language education in the Amianan regions, and other regions of the country similarly situated educationally;
2.  To specify the best practices for mother language education and evolve from these practices other alternative practices appropriate to specific cultures; and
3.  To engage in a critical and committed intellectual conversation relative to the connection between mother language education and cultural nationalism.


PAPER PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS
Paper proposals for the 6th Nakem International Conference should zero in on the theme of the conference and its three-pronged specific goals as stated above.
The following sub-themes are also accepted for presentation either in the plenary, the parallel or the demonstration session.
1.  Best practices in MLE from the regions;
2.  Strategies and approaches in developing an MLE curriculum in a particular school setting and geographic location;
3.  Alternative practices in education to cultural nationalism;
4.  The nexus of MLE and cultural nationalism;
5.  Celebrating and cerebrating diversity and pluralism;
6.  The plural and diverse MLE classroom;
7.  Nation, Nations, and the MLE classroom;
8.  Developing educational materials for MLE; and
9.  Cultural nationalism and emancipatory education.

Only abstracts of 300 words are accepted for presentation at the 6th Nakem International Conference. Each abstract must zero in on one or more of the themes or sub-themes listed in this Call for Paper. All abstracts must be sent to ALL the following on or before February 28, 2011:

Notice of acceptance of abstracts will be emailed to conference paper proponents on or before March 16, 2011.

All notices will be emailed—and only electronic versions—e-versions—will be sent to proponents. No other versions will be used; hence, all proponents are advised to have their email addresses.

Please take note that all abstract submissions must follow the format above. To give a chance to other presenters, no two submissions will be accepted from the same presenter. Proponents will be asked to choose in case of multiple acceptances of multiple submissions.
Abstracts must zero in on the gist of the paper presentation. All other details that are not part of the gist must be left out.

Panel and Demo Proposal Requirements
For panel or demo proposals, each panel or demo shall consist of no less than three members, all of them working on the same theme, issue or topic but each speaker must present an individual paper. Two abstracts are needed: the panel abstract and the abstract for each paper, with the same specific requirements as those in individual presentations.
Deadline for submission of abstracts: February 28, 2011.

REGISTRATION DETAILS
·      Registration deadline is April 15, 2011. The registration form should be submitted and the corresponding registration fee paid through the bank or through the Board of Directors.
·      Registration fee includes conference kit and meals during the actual date of the conference and accommodation at the venue or other hotels close to the venue. The fee is set at P3,000 for Philippine participants and US $100 for overseas participants.
·      Early bird registration is encouraged. Participants who register and pay the appropriate registration fee early get discounts. Philippine participants pay only P2,800; participants overseas, $75. Remit your registration fee only through the Nakem bank account when you register on or before March 15, 2011.
  • The registration fee, along with the filled out registration form, may also be handed to any of the members of the Board of Directors of Nakem Conferences Philippines including members of the 2011 Nakem Conference Steering and Working Committees. Official receipts will also be issued by these officers accordingly.

·      Participants are encouraged to book their accommodation early. Hotels and inns in Banaue, Ifugao are fully booked during the summer season.
·      Only the actual dates of the conference—covering two nights and three days—are being included in the registration fee. Those arriving before and leaving after these actual dates are advised to book their hotels on their own.
·      The 2011 Nakem Conference Secretariat and Steering and Working Committees are not in a position to do the booking for these participants except for the actual dates of the conference.
·      All participants will be accommodated at the conference venue, unless they opt to get accommodations elsewhere. All accommodation details at the venue will be arranged by the Nakem Conference Secretariat.
·      For logistical reasons, all participants are required to submit, by mail or by email, the confirmation of their participation by filling out the registration form. Exception is given to those who have direct contact to any of the members of Nakem Conferences Philippines.
